Nav Jyoti Mahila Sangharsh Mandal

PGSS began its work of empowerment and mainstreaming of the excluded groups through the medium of Mahila Mandals (women’s groups). The hands on experience with the Mahila Mandals proved to be a miracle with many and many groups joining in. Promoted as the platform of collective action and pressure groups, the Mahila Mandals meet, discuss the decide for the benefit of the village community. With the brand of Nav Jyoti Mahila Sangharsh Mandal (NJMSM), it has been striving to fight for the rights of the excluded groups of the society. The collectivism does not end at village level. The groups have federated into block level, district level and Mandal level federations to take up the issues at higher level and to raise a stronger voice in favour of the excluded.

A total of 14105 rural women have been organized into 657 village level Mahila Mandals while 28 block level, 07 district level and 02 divisional level federations stand as the axiom of women’s empowerment. PGSS is working towards women empowerment right since its formation it visualises a society with gender equity.

The objectives to work towards women empowerment are multi-pronged:
• To attain the gender equity
• To have equal opportunities for girl children to education
• To ensure participation in decision making beginning from family circles
• To eliminate all forms of violence against women
• To promote economic independence
• To motivate for political participation and their effective role in decision making
• To build up local leadership
• To mobilize public opinion on specific issues and problems of women
• To build a strong women’s movement
• To network with other women organizations

Under women empowerment development interventions are those which affect the entire society. Thus emphasis is laid on women education, women health, income generation activities, resistance of exploitation and attainment of social justice.

Empowering women in an area like Purvanchal is not easy due to the prevealling of the old mindset and feudal society. The task is onerous. In view of this, a community based structure - Nav Jyoti Mahila Sangharsh Mandal has been formed. The members of these groups take action on issues the women in the area face and act as a link between PGSS and the community in general.
