Mothers’ Groups

Formation and strengthening of Mothers’ groups (MGs) was taken up as a step to promote safe motherhood. The members include pregnant women, lactating mothers, their close relatives like mothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and service providers like ASHAS, ANMs and AWWs. At present there are 496 MGs striving to promote safe motherhood in the focus area of PGSS. The MGs have a long term strategy to minimize the infant mortality and maternal mortality rates in the focus area. Monthly meetings of MGs help in orienting the focus issues on ante and post natal care. The MGs also help in tracking the condition of pregnant women through home visits. Identification of emergency vehicle for taking the pregnant women to health centres for institutional deliveries and facilitating access of the focus families to the benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana are some other steps facilitated through the platform of MGs. The meetings of MGs also help in tracking the immunization of the children in the age group of 0-5 years. All these steps are directed towards reducing maternal and infant deaths.
