Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR):

Gorakhpur region is vulnerable in terms of natural and human-made disasters. Frequent onslaught of the floods, innumerable deaths caused by Encephalitis, cyclone and summer fire are some of the disasters that hit and mar the area. The worst suffer is the rural community. Shouldering the responsibility of minimizing vulnerability of the rural community, PGSS took up the task of community managed disaster risk reduction (CMDRR) in 20 villages of Brahmapur and Khorabar blocks of Gorakhpur district. The task of enabling the community to reduce the risk of disaster includes:

  • preparation of village level community disaster plan,
  • awareness building through different mediums (wall writing, hand bills, puppet shows, street plays ),
  • participatory learning appraisal (PLA),
  • formation and capacity building of task forces,
  • mock drills on rescue and relief works,
  • raising the level of hand pumps,
  • raising the plinth level of houses,
  • promotion of contingency fund,
  • protection of fodder and fuel,
  • plantation,
  • promotion of grain banks etc.
The community has learnt to assess its vulnerability in view of frequent floods. It now prepares its actions plans and takes steps to minimize the vulnerability caused by disasters. At present we can see vulnerable families ready with family security kits, protecting important documents, practicing early crops and preparing rafts and life jackets, boats with locally available resources.

Children and PwDs are the worst affected lot during and after the floods. This aspect was noticed by PGSS during its CMRDRR related interventions. That is why, It has a plan to take up child centric CMDRR and disability centric CMDRR in other parts of the focus area.
