Community Based Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability

Mainstreaming of the Persons with Disability (PwDs) including Children with Disability (CwDs) has been an important concern of the organization. The program called ‘Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)’ is a reflection of this concern. With a helping hand from Stitching Liliane Fonds (SLF), Varanasi, the organization promotes the community based rehabilitation of CwDs through its community centres. The components of the program include medical aid, counseling, educational aid, vocational training for initiating livelihood, empowerment through groups of CwDs and their parents and their access to the government programs like pension, rail/bus concession etc.

At present 180 CwDs have been getting the benefits of the CBR program as a step towards integration in the mainstream of society.

The aim of the CBR interventions include:-
a. The child participates in the family activities.
b. The child participates in the activities outside the family.
c. The child/youngster attends school, has a job or another meaningful day spending.
d. The parents know how to cope with the disability of the child.

A regular monitoring is ensured on the following:-
• Children have nutritious food, secure home and access to health facilities.
• No one takes advantage of children and their minds and bodies are protected.
• Children have a right to study, to play with whomever they want.
• Children are allowed to express their opinion and feelings.
• All the related Govt. certificates such as handicapped certificate, railway concession, income certificate etc are issued bona fide and from appropriate authorities. PGSS plays a facilitative role for the above identification.

At present PGSS is operating the following rehabilitation centers within the dioceses:-

Community Centre
Rehabilitation Program
Type of Disability
Campierganj Boarding and Education for girls Mentally challenged
Kasia Boarding and Education for girls Physically challenged (Orthopedic)
Maharajganj Joyful learning through kindergarten program and physiotherapy services (HOPE). Orthopedic and mentally challenged

'Udaan': The World Disability Day is celebrated every year by PGSS with a support from Catholic Diocese of Gorakhpur under the brand ‘Udaan’. The day witnesses cultural and educational activities and competitions organized for the CwDs. The participation in these events followed by felicitation of the winners has been receiving applauses by district administration, media and the voluntary sector as a meaningful step towards integration of the CwDs in the mainstream of society.

Hope, the Ability Centre at Maharajganj stands for the mainstreaming of the PwDs and CwDs of the adjoining areas. The services offered by the centre include physiotherapy, counseling, development of social habits, empowerment through community based groups and facilitation of access to the government programs like pension, scholarship and disability certificates etc .
